Description
Tenth highest mountain in the world at 8,091 metres (26,545 ft) above sea level. It is located in Nepal, attraction for Mountain Climbers. It became the first 8,000 meter mountain to be successfully climbed. Located to the east of a great gorge that cuts through the Himalayas by the Kali Gandaki river, this mountain range has glaciers on its western and northwestern slopes, which drain into this gorge. The Annapurna peaks are among the world's most dangerous mountains to climb. By March 2012, there had been 191 summit ascents of Annapurna I, and 61 climbing fatalities on the mountain. In particular, the ascent via the south face is considered, by some, the most difficult of all climbs. In October 2014, at least 39 people were killed as a result of snowstorms and avalanches on and around Annapurna, in Nepal's worst ever trekking disaster. Annapurna is a Sanskrit name which literally means "full of food", but is normally translated as Goddess of the Harvests. the universal and timeless kitchen-goddess ... the mother who feeds. Without her there is starvation, a universal fear. This makes Annapurna a universal goddess.
The economy of Nepal, a nation of 27.8 million people, is heavily dependent on tourism, principally trekking and Himalayan mountain climbing. Nepal suffered its worst recorded earthquake in 1934, which measured 8.0 and all but destroyed the cities of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Patan.

A beautiful view from the base camp, Carol ! I like to remember this place, but now all the ice from the lower part has gone and behind the houses there is a deep dell.
Carol Wisniewski replied:
Thank you Rudi for stopping to comment. Would that be a seasonal change in the make up of geography of the surrounding area? It is an overwhelming site to be there to see this beautiful mountain.
