Description
A Winner in the "Lighthouse with Watercolor/and or Pen & Ink Contest" July 2012.
Built in 1796, the Montauk Point Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in New York State and the fourth oldest operating lighthouse in the United States.
This is the lighthouse that stands to protect ships on the eastern end of South Fork, Long Island, NY. The Lighthouse is at the furtherest tip of Long Island. It is the oldest lighthouse in New York State. The Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, under President George Washington, in 1792. Construction began on June 7, 1796 and was completed on November 5, 1796. This historic landmark has been part of Long Island's land and seascape for over 200 years and still serves as an active aid to navigation.
Members of the U.S. Lighthouse Service and the U.S. Coast Guard have been the residing keepers, tending the light for those at sea. Whaling ships, steamers, submarines, fishing and sailing vessels of all kinds have passed this tower on Turtle Hill, guided and reassured by its presence. On land, generations of visitors have made the trek to Long Island's easternmost tip, marveling at this lighthouse, the work of the keeper, and the beauty of Montauk Point.
Automated by the Coast Guard in 1987, the Montauk Point Lighthouse no longer needs a lightkeeper; however, a keeper of its history is essential. Under a program to provide for the continued maintenance and preservation of this historic lighthouse, the Coast Guard has transferred ownership of the lighthouse to the Montauk Historical Society.
Drawn with pen & sepia ink.

Thank you, This is one of the first and few p&i I had chosen to do in pen & ink, it's a very old lighthouse, dating back to 1796 and is the fourth oldest standing lighthouse in the US. I am sure it has guided many a mariner on his way and has stories to tell.

Hello Carol, Thanks for your nice comment. Sorry for delay, big 3-day (successful) art show this past weekend. I've seen your work and admired your talents. Love your sepia work, especially this one as it's fairly close to home. And your use of color is soft and wonderful too. Wishing you all the best, Cate
